Hike, Feast, Bonfire and Camp:
I’m having a Soup Hike at my place in Apollo.
We’ll meet at my place no later than 2:30 p.m. and go for
an easy 5 mile hike. Upon returning from the hike, we’ll
feast on the various goodies that people brought. You
should bring something to share for 5 to 6 people
(brownies, apple pie, cake, chips, cookies, etc.) There are
outlets to plug in crock pots, if necessary. After the feast.
I’ll light the bonfire along the river, and we can enjoy the
evening chatting, playing games, and sharing tales of incredible
feats. Please bring a chair to sit on around the
fire. You’re welcome to pitch a tent and camp. In the
morning we’ll do breakfast at the Creekside Restaurant
across the river from Apollo. This IS a family event.
Please, NO DOGS or other pets. You can attend all five
parts, or any one of them.
The Paddle:
I’ll be doing a 12 mile paddle on the Kiski River
on Sunday, June 1st, the day after the hike. I have a limited
number of kayaks available for use. I only ask that
you help clean and stow the boats after the paddle. Those
attending Saturday’s events will have first choice to use
one of my boats. If you have your own boat, it doesn’t
matter. The Kiski River is mostly a docile class 1 river
with a couple spots of mild class 2 “fun foam”.
We’ll meet at my place no later than 9:30 a.m.,
set up a shuttle, and proceed to the put in at Saltsburg.
We’ll paddle 4 miles and stop for lunch at Avonmore.
You should bring your own lunch. There is a pavilion and
a Porta Potty there. We’ll then proceed another 4 miles to
Copper Head Cove for a swim break. After the break,
we’ll proceed the final 4 miles to the take out at my place.
We’ll then ask for volunteers to help retrieve shuttle vehicles.
Below is a list of what you will need to bring on
the kayak trip:
Items for after the paddle:
The shower upstairs in the garage is available to
anyone who wants to freshen up after the paddle. Please
bring your own towels and personal items. I’ll be making
burgers on the grill after the paddle for everyone attending.
Please RSVP to Steve if you are coming, or with questions.
Please mention the number of people camping in
your party. WHEN RESPONDING BY EMAIL,
PLEASE PUT ‘SOUP HIKE’ IN THE SUBJECT LINE.
IMPORTANT—When responding, you must let
me know which activity you are coming to on Saturday
and if you would like to paddle on Sunday. If you want to
paddle on Sunday, I’ll reply to you and let you know if I
have a yak available for you. PLEASE NOTE: If you sign
up for a yak, please show up. My boats go quickly and
there is usually a waiting list for them. A no-show takes a
yak that someone else could have used.
The garage is heated and has a full kitchen and
bathroom facilities. This event goes rain or shine.
Directions from Greensburg and points South:
Take US 119 North. Take PA Turnpike 66 North. Take
PA 66 North to Apollo (watch signs). Cross bridge (river)
into Apollo and turn right at traffic light onto Kiski Avenue.
Go approximately 8/10 mile to fork in road (follow
signs to Roaring Run Trail) and take right fork onto Canal
Road (paved). Steve’s house is 4th house on left on Canal
Road.
